If you have difficulty with self-sabotage, here’s a way to start noticing what thoughts and fears are tripping you up. Suppose you lose weight (or imagine yourself at your ideal weight). Start noticing any uncomfortable thoughts or feelings you might have and treat them with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT).
One way to do this is to complete the sentence: "The problem with this weight loss is ____________"
Listen for what arises without judgment. You might hear phrases such as:
. . . I’d have to maintain it.
. . . I’ll never keep it off.
. . . I don’t want the attention.
. . . I can never have dessert again.
. . . I will be separate from my friends.
Accept whatever comes up and treat it with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT):
Even though I am afraid I won’t be able to keep it off, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Even though I don’t want more attention, I love and accept myself anyway.
We are usually so focused on getting the weight off that we don’t think ahead for how to keep it off. If you use Emotional Freedom Techniques, you won’t have to keep repeating the pattern.
