Imagine that there’s a magic button in front of you, and if you push it, all of a sudden, you are instantly at your ideal weight and all of your bad habits and addictions will disappear, with no effort, and you’ll go out of today’s session in a state of euphoria.
Will you push that button?
As it turns out, many people will NOT push the button, or would be highly ambivalent about it. For each person, the reasons will be different, but they are generally compelling.
I once had a client in my practice who realized during the course of our sessions that the reason she wasn’t losing weight was because her mother had been on a diet… and then went off the diet… and continued losing weight.
The reason my client’s mother was losing weight was because she had lung cancer. She died a few months later. In my client’s mind, she associated the outcome of losing weight with death. That’s a pretty powerful motivator, and it’s a really good reason not to get to the goal!
It reminds me of an old saying among physicians “when the diet starts working, check for cancer.” But this is no laughing matter.
This revelation only came out during our tapping session. It’s a good example of how the tapping is going to take us somewhere…we just don’t know where it’s going to take us when we start.
Often when we use the word “resistance,” it seems to imply that we are acting like a 3-year-old child. But how many people are walking around frustrated because they have some hidden agenda lurking in their subconscious mind?
Often the hidden agenda is one thing and one thing only – to be safe. If it doesn’t feel safe to lose weight for any reason, even something hidden to your own conscious mind… it just won’t happen.
In her conscious mind, my client desperately wanted to lose weight. She couldn’t think of any reason why she kept backsliding.
This is an example of “outcome” resistance, as described by Dr. David Burns. These are the folks who don’t feel comfortable when they get to the goal or feel like they don’t deserve it.
Yet, most people set the same goals every year, which is a really bad idea and very frustrating!
Besides weight loss being a terrible goal to begin with, setting the same terrible goal every year just reinforces in your mind the idea that you set goals and don’t achieve them.
Find out how to set goals to make them more achievable and how to use EFT Tapping to stop getting in your own way.
